ATC announces 2017-18 Board

Dear Austin Tennis Club Members:

I am excited to announce your new board of directors for 2017-2018. The results of the election are:

President - Alan Gnani
Vice President - Kevin Haynes
Treasurer - Michael McClellan
Secretary - Caleb Phillips
Communications Director - Scott Crews
Membership Director - Ricky Robinson
Social Director - Loren Coffelt
Competitive Tennis Director - Mojo Canales
Note: There were no contested races.

After serving two years as ATC President, I am thrilled with the newly elected board of directors. The new board is a mix of ATC and board veterans, and members who are newer to the club. I believe it's a perfect balance of talent, passion and experience that will help continue to move our club forward.

I also want to thank outgoing board members who are stepping down from board service including long-time Board Secretary Mike Sepulveda and Social Director Shadana Hurd. I offer a special, heartfelt thanks to outgoing Vice President Aubrey Wilkerson, who has served in many capacities on behalf of ATC including as Co-Captain of Texas Cup for several years and HOT Tournament Director.

I firmly believe our club is only as strong as the members who volunteer to lead. I am forever grateful for those I had the privilege of serving with. I encourage you to look for opportunities to serve ATC and help make our club as strong, vibrant and rewarding as it can be. We have something very special and I can't wait to see where our new board leads us.

Best,

Ted Burton
President
Austin Tennis Club

Austin will be joining Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio to compete in the team singles and doubles competition held over two days on July 8 - 9 in San Antonio.

To compete in Texas Cup for Austin, you must be a registered member of the club. The team is chosen from the the ATC singles ladder with 24 spots going to players in ranked order on the singles ladder that are available that weekend. Two spots are held as the Texas Cup captain's choice. Doubles pairs are at the discretion of the Texas Cup captain with consideration given to Texas Cup team members that routinely play together.

To ensure you make the Austin Texas Cup team you must be on the ladder and be a registered member of the club. Joining the ladder no longer requires a challenge match. Please contact the Competitive Director, Alan Gnani, to get your name on the ladder. HOWEVER, to be eligible for Texas Cup, you must be on the ladder and have played and won a challenge match to demonstrate your placement on the ladder and the Texas Cup team. If you would like to make sure you're higher on the ladder and increase your chances of making the Texas Cup team, you should challenge members on the ladder. All ladder challenge matches must be complete by no later than June 18. The Texas Cup captain will be using ladder standings at that time to select the Austin Texas Cup team. Since this is an "away" year, ATC would like to set our team roster as early as possible to allow for travel planning.

Changes to ATC Social Tennis

In an effort to maximize participation in ATC's two most popular social tennis activities on Tuesday and Friday night and be efficient with club funds, the Board of Directors voted to cancel Sunday morning social tennis.

ATC has been paying for courts and balls at Pharr on Sunday mornings at a cost of $1,000 a year, but attendance has been extremely low - never more than one court of players. Sunday morning has multiple conflicts for players including USTA leagues, church etc.

For now, we believe it's best to put our energy behind maintaining/growing the two most popular evenings for social tennis.

Congrats US Open Racket Bracket Winners!

Congratulations to this year's US Open Racket Bracket Winners!

This year's Women's draw was full of upsets so it was an incredibly tough draw to get correct. Del Potro taking the title from Fed was also a bit of a surprise on the men's side.

This year's winners are:

  • Women's Draw:Tim Wei (209 points)
  • Men's Draw:Doug Plummer (192 points)

We'll be back in January with the Australian Open Draw!

ATC Wimbledon Racket Bracket

Wimbledon Logo

Think you know who's going to shine at Wimbledon this year?

Will this be Fed's 15th Grand Slam? Will Rafa's knees fail him before defending his title? Maybe this is the year Murray makes his move? Roddick? Maybe Verdasco (man, I hope we see a lot of him on TV during this tournament!)

Let's see how the ATC folks do at picking the winner this year. Enter the ATC Racket Bracket (hosted by Tourneytopia, the same people that do Tennis Channel's Racket Bracket) and pick your winners! Entries open Friday morning and you can enter your picks all the way through Monday morning. Points will be awarded based on the round:

  • 1 point for each first round match
  • 2 points for each second round match
  • 3 points for each third round match
  • 5 points for each fourth round match
  • 10 points for each quarterfinal match
  • 20 points for each semifinal match
  • 30 points for picking the final
That's it! Let's see who can pick the winners this year!

Oh... and by the way, the MEMBER who has the highest point total might just win something from the ATC Board. (Yes, I'm being secretive because I'm not sure exactly what that prize will be!)
